About UL

UL is an international science safety company whose goal is to insure safety to consumer’s products. UL was founded in 1894 and in 1903 developed the first standard for safety. In 1913 changed building construction by improving construction standards of walls. In 1921 UL Certified the First Refrigerator. Tests range from shock hazard to the ability of small kids being able to open it from the inside. In 1923 UL certified the first Burglary-resistant Safe. 1930 UL certified the first Automatic Dish Washer. 1937 UL certifies the first washing machine. 1939 UL certified the first black and white TV. 1940 UL certifies the first vending machine. 1966 UL certified the first seat belt. In 1975 UL developed the Federal Television Standard in response to 10,000 reports of TV Tube fires. 1978 UL certified the first personal computer. In 1988 UL certified the first bullet resistant vest for police.

If you have researched purchasing a hoverboard online, and are conscious about safety, then you have likely heard about the UL 2272 Certification that is now the industry standard for hoverboard safety. Underwriter Laboratories, a United States based safety organization, is in charge of testing various types of electronics to ensure they are safe for public consumption. UL has only certified a handful of hoverboard brands so far up until this point, and we are happy to report that we have UL 2272 Certified Hoverboards For Sale right now in our new product collection.

How Does UL 2272 Differ From UL 1642?

The UL 1642 Certification is certifying the safety of the Lithium Ion Batteries used in these devices, whereas the new UL 2272 evaluates the safety of the electrical drive train system and battery and charger system combinations, ensuring that they are safe from fire safety hazards and will not explode or spontaneously catch fire during use. I guess if you really wanted to get picky, you could say that the boards that only have the UL 1642 certification are not as safe because they are only tested to ensure the batteries themselves are safe, whereas the 2272 is a more thorough certification which looks at not only the batteries, but the entire electrical system, and how that system interacts with the batteries during extended periods of prolonged use.

So, if you want to ensure that you are purchasing the safest type of hoverboard then go with the 2272, but if you are on a budget, the UL 1642 should be fine, as we have experienced no problems with them whatsoever. The real problem devices that are flooding the market are the cheap chinese imitation hoverboards that don't have either UL certification, and are constructed with extremely cheap parts using cheap labor, making for a low quality but high profit product. Buyer beware!

How Can I Tell If My Hoverboard Is UL Certified?

If your board is UL certified then it will have a sticker on the bottom that looks like this:

UL sticker

Not the warning sticker, but the shiny chrome sticker that says "UL" on it, and it will have a file number that you can look up on UL's web site to verify that it is actually certified. That is the number one way to protect yourself when buying a hoverboard, make sure that it has at least a UL 1642 certification, which you can find with all of our GlideCraft brands on our online store. If you are ready to spend a little bit extra to guarantee the safety of your board, and you demand the newest safety certification then you can purchase your board from our UL 2272 Certified Stock today!
